Possible Cure for Leukemia Found in Fish Oil

by Press Release : Dec 29, 2011 : Pennsylvania State University

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/12/111222103112.htm
"We have shown that some metabolites of Omega-3 have the ability to selectively kill the leukemia-causing stem cells in mice. The important thing is that the mice were completely cured of leukemia with no relapse." -Sandeep Prabhu
NOTE FROM FOUNDING EDITOR: I'm sorry for those of you whom this discovery may be coming too late. Though it may take some time before the patent is approved, if it is granted, its value will be beyond comprehension, both in what it will accomplish and its monetary worth. -Steve Shultz
(Pennsylvania) - A compound produced from fish oil that appears to target leukemia stem cells could lead to a cure for the disease, according to Penn State researchers.
The compound - delta-12-protaglandin J3, or D12-PGJ3 - targeted and killed the stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, in mice, said Sandeep Prabhu, associate professor of immunology and molecular toxicology in the Department of Veterinary and Medical Sciences. The compound is produced from EPA - Eicosapentaenoic Acid - an Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and in fish oil, he said. (Photo: The compound shown above is D12-PGJ2, which closely resembles delta-12-protaglandin J3, or D12-PGJ3, a compound that targeted and killed the stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia or CML in mice. "Research in the past on fatty acids has shown the health benefits of fatty acids on cardiovascular system and brain development, particularly in infants, but we have shown that some metabolites of Omega-3 have the ability to selectively kill the leukemia-causing stem cells in mice," said Prabhu. "The important thing is that the mice were completely cured of leukemia with no relapse."
The researchers, who released their findings in the current issue of Blood, said the compound kills cancer-causing stem cells in the mice's spleen and bone marrow. Specifically, it activates a gene - p53 - in the leukemia stem cell that programs the cell's own death.
"p53 is a tumor suppressor gene that regulates the response to DNA damage and maintains genomic stability," Prabhu said.
Killing the stem cells in leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, is important because stem cells can divide and produce more cancer cells, as well as create more stem cells, Prabhu said.
The current therapy for CML extends the patient's life by keeping the number of leukemia cells low, but the drugs fail to completely cure the disease because they do not target leukemia stem cells, said Robert Paulson, associate professor of veterinary and biomedical sciences, who co-directed this research with Prabhu.
"The patients must take the drugs continuously," said Paulson. "If they stop, the disease relapses because the leukemia stem cells are resistant to the drugs."
Current treatments are unable to kill the leukemia stem cells, Paulson said.
"These stem cells can hide from the treatment, and a small population of stem cells give rise to more leukemia cells," said Paulson. "So, targeting the stem cells is essential if you want to cure leukemia."
During the experiments, the researchers injected each mouse with about 600 nanograms of D12-PGJ3 each day for a week. Tests showed that the mice were completely cured of the disease. The blood count was normal, and the spleen returned to normal size. The disease did not relapse.
In previous experiments, the compound also killed the stem cells of Friend Virus-induced leukemia, an experimental model for human leukemia.
The researchers focused on D12-PGJ3 because it killed the leukemia stem cells, but had the least number of side effects. The researchers currently are working to determine whether the compound can be used to treat the terminal stage of CML, referred to as Blast Crisis. There are currently no drugs available that can treat the disease when it progresses to this stage.

The researchers, who applied for a patent, are also preparing to test the compound in human trials.

BREAKING RESEARCH SHOWS Vitamin D LINKED TO HDL Cholesterol

In this study, intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements was strongly linked with vitamin D levels in the blood. The greater the intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements, the higher the amount of vitamin D found in the blood. More importantly, as vitamin D intakes increased, HDL cholesterol (or “good cholesterol”) levels increased as well. Future research is needed to determine if vitamin D from dietary supplements can lower risk levels for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Shaklee has Vitamin D which is very affordable. Here is the link and check it out. Shaklee's Vita-D

THE TRUTH!!

You may have heard about a study, Dietary Supplements and Mortality Rate in Older Women, published in the October 10 issue of the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine.
We believe the study results and conclusions are presented in a biased and unduly negative manner, when in fact, the results are inconclusive at best. It’s also very clear that this study should not be used to draw conclusions regarding the effects of supplementation on human health.
Some possible limitations of the study include:

1. The study is an observational study that only describes associations and does not prove cause and effect. It should be considered with all the research on dietary supplementation, including the Shaklee Landmark Study which showed that long-term Shaklee supplement users had markedly better health than both single supplement users and nonusers.

2. The study results actually show that calcium supplementation reduces risk for total mortality, but this positive finding is buried among the negative headlines. This seems indicative of the bias present in reporting the study results.
3. In the original study analysis, users of B vitamins, vitamins C, D, E, and calcium had significantly lower risk of total mortality compared to nonusers. Only after adjustment of the data were some of these nutrients associated with a very slight increased risk for total mortality.

4. Supplemental iron is identified as increasing the risk of total mortality in this elderly female population. Shaklee recognizes that supplemental iron is not required by seniors without specific iron needs, and this is precisely the reason our Vitalizer Gold product for adults age 50+ has never contained iron.

5. Supplemental copper was linked to a slightly increased risk of total mortality. Shaklee recognizes that copper intakes are generally adequate and this is reflected in the reduced levels of copper found in our 4 new Vitalizer formulas.

6. The dietary supplement collection tools were not validated for this population and the investigators presented no data to support their conclusions regarding dosage levels. We find it difficult to make conclusions regarding the effects of supplementation when intake levels are not reported.

7. There are no explanations or reasons given for supplement usage, nor was there any screening for individuals at higher risk of disease. In many cases we see increasing use of supplements for therapeutic reasons, especially with increasing age.
In closing, we believe that this study needs to be considered with the totality of the evidence supporting supplementation. The overwhelming body of research on supplementation supports the prudent use of dietary supplements as a part of a healthy lifestyle, to fill nutritional gaps in the diet, to support a high quality of life, and to support a longer, healthier life. At Shaklee, we believe that a preventive approach to health begins much earlier in life than in the 60's and we commit to staying at the leading edge of science and health, and our products and health recommendations will always reflect these principles.

Shaklee-Helping Prevent Breast Cancer!

About 1 in 8 women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases occur in men.
Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers in women (about 28%) are breast cancer.
For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
About 70-80% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.
Two trillion dollars a year go into cancer health care.  This includes cancer research and cancer therapy, rather than prevention.
Yet there’s a lot one can do nutritionally to both prevent breast cancer and to help one survive breast cancer.
Shaklee’s RX for a Healthier Life Package of products along with additional Vita-D3 Supplementation offers an excellent cancer prevention program.
Vitalizer: Provides complete anti-oxidant protection.
Vivix: Resveratrol to help treat the individualized expression of breast cancer, for non-hormonal breast cancer and for prevention.
NutriFeron: Increases production & stimulation of T-killer cells, which destroy cancer cells.
Cinch Shake or Energizing Protein: Dietary soy intake among women with breast cancer is significantly associated with lower risk for death and recurrence, according to the results of a large, population-based cohort study reported in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The four above products can all be found in Shaklee’s RX for a Healthier Life Pack. For more information and to order it online go to: RX for Healthier Life

Shaklee vs Seventh Generation-Which Household Cleaner is the Better Choice?

Doing a cost comparison on Shaklee's Basic H natural cleaner and Seventh Generation's Free and Clear, some real differences can be seen. Seventh Generation's 32oz bottle cost around $6. With Shaklee Basic H formula(priced at $12), 2 drops of this highly concentrated stuff in 16oz of water makes 1900 bottles of Seventh Generation's Free and Clear. WOW!! Which one should I purchase? This is a no brainer. Also, add a teaspoon of this great stuff added to 16oz of water makes a perfect all purpose cleaner, which equals 190 bottles of Seventh Generation's all purpose cleaner.

Seventh Generation claims to be all natural, but looking at the ingredients it contains synthetic preservatives. The last time I looked I thought synthetic means man-made. Hmmm.  Here is a link to Basic H, helping Mother Natural since 1956. Shaklee's Basic H

BREAKING RESEARCH SHOWS Vitamin D LINKED TO HDL Cholesterol

BREAKING RESEARCH SHOWS Vitamin D LINKED TO HDL Cholesterol

Research supported by Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S., shows that a lower blood vitamin D level is associated with metabolic syndrome and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
The study results were presented at the National Lipid Association Annual Scientific Sessions in Miami, Florida and suggest an important role of vitamin D nutrition for maintaining cardiovascular health.
“I am so proud to be associated with a company whose heritage has always been about improving people’s health and well-being.  It’s very exciting that Shaklee has helped to bring this important research to the world, says Independent Shaklee Distributor, Mike Lucas. “The findings may have significant public health implications related to new understanding about benefits related to vitamin D supplementation,” adds Lucas.

“Our next study, which is already underway, is intended to confirm causality by showing that vitamin D supplementation improves cardiovascular risk factors,” says Dr. Jamie McManus M.D., Chairman of Medical Affairs, Health Sciences and Education, Shaklee Corporation.
Kevin C. Maki, PhD, the study’s Principal Investigator and the Chief Science Officer of Provident Clinical Research, Glen Ellyn, IL, says, “Results from population studies suggest that a low serum vitamin D concentration is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality, but this is the first study to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and cardiovascular risk factors in a group that includes a large number of vitamin D supplement users.”  He continues, “Additional research is warranted to assess whether increasing vitamin D intake will improve the metabolic cardiovascular risk factor profile.”

Plant Sterols and Stanols: What they Are and Why they Are Important

Plant sterols and stanols are found naturally in the cell walls of plants; they occur in very small amounts in foods such as fruits, vegetables and vegetable oils, seeds, beans, and cereal grains. More than 80 clinical studies support the benefits of plant sterol and stanol consumption for lowering blood cholesterol levels, especially LDL ("bad") cholesterol, without lowering levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol.

How they Work: Plant sterols and stanols have been shown in numerous studies to lower LDL cholesterol
. Because they're similar in structure to cholesterol, they compete for absorption in the intestines. So with regular consumption of plant sterols and stanols, less cholesterol gets absorbed into the bloodstream, and the better your chances for lowering your LDL cholesterol.
Don't Miss Out on the Benefits of Plant Sterols and StanolsSo if you want to lower your cholesterol levels, try following the guidelines from the National Institutes of Health: Reduce your intake of saturated fat and cholesterol, exercise daily, lose weight if needed, and eat plenty of fiber-rich whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. And don't forget to get the extra cholesterol-lowering benefit that comes from adding 2,000 mg of clinically proven plant sterols and stanols to your diet every day.

Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai Will be Sadly Missed

Earlier this week, the world mourned the loss of a great woman. Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai was a tireless pioneer and advocate for freedom, self-sustenance, and for what she called our “beautiful blue planet.” She was also a remarkable woman, a dedicated mother and grandmother, and a beloved member of our Shaklee family.
In each generation, there are a few who live their life with such passion, determination, and inspiration, that they make a lasting impact on millions of people. Wangari was such a person. She was the first woman from Central and East Africa to earn a doctorate degree and then became the first person to win a Nobel Peace Prize for the environment. Wangari did so by providing over a million people with the ability to earn an income by planting trees - and through her example and theirs, inspired the rest of the world to follow.
Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai joined Shaklee Chairman and CEO Roger Barnett in planting the One Millionth Tree.
It is difficult to express what Wangari Maathai has meant to me personally. It has been a privilege to know her. What I will remember most about her is her wonderful smile that would light up the darkest of days. And her gentle, but never-take-no for an answer, constant advocacy to rise up and do more for people and our planet. I will miss her deeply, but I know that her memory will remain vivid and strong for all of us. We will continue her legacy that each of us can make a difference, that we can be the hummingbird in the forest, doing what we can. And through the collective force and power of all 1.2 million members of the Shaklee Family, we too can make a difference that will last for generations.

Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy go to Wangari’s children Wanjira, Waweru, and Muta and to her granddaughter, Ruth Wangari. We offer them our love and support, and the certain knowledge that their mother’s work endures in all that we do.

Family and friends,

---Bob Ferguson, Fairfield, Iowa

Chris' Story

Bob's friend Chris replied to his story on Facebook:

"I agree Bob. After a month on the new formula I can tell a big difference. Last year in Anaheim I broke my ankle in three places. What a major ouch that was! Now a year later I can walk a couple of miles or do 15 minutes on the eliptical at the gym and over a mile on the treadmill without pain. I've even been able to cut back on Pain Relief Complex. Oh am I'm just a year behind you in age. Yeah 60's!!

---Chris Hartmann Schmelzer, Centennial, Colorado

Susan's Story

We have some pretty steep hills in the Tucson mountain area where I live. The hill next to our home is very steep. My knees started complaining after climbing it on my road bike--not sharp pain but some discomfort. That was a wake up call to me to start taking care of them before things got worse. I got a bottle of the original Joint Health Complex. In a few days, the discomfort was gone and my knees felt like they had been oiled from the inside. They used to snap sometimes when I walked, like cracking knuckles. A doctor told me once that it was a lack of synovial fluid. My dad had the same problem, so it was probably genetic. The original Joint Health Complex also got rid of my snap, crackle and pop after a few days!

Our old dogs--a black lab mix and a Vizsla mix-- were having problems getting up and down off the patio, so they got my Joint Health Complex. I opened one capsule on their dog food once a day. Before I knew it they were moving like young dogs again.

I just got a bottle of the New Advanced Joint Health Complex today. I can't wait to see what it does too!

Fiber-Thats whats in it!

Here is some great info on our Cinch products and fiber. I was reading an article about fiber. Most of us know we need fiber in our diet. There are two kinds of fiber soluble and non-soluble. I found out that when the toxins are dumped from our cells into the blood they are carried to the liver for removal. The liver removes the toxins from the blood and sends them to the intestine in what is called bile. When in the intestine the toxins get attached to the soluble fiber and carried out of our bodies. If there is no soluble fiber the toxins get reabsorbed back into the blood.

I took a look at my Shaklee Cinch shake and found that it contained 6 gm of soluble fiber. In fact that was the only fiber that was in it. The organic high fiber cereal that I have been eating made by Kashi had 6 gm fiber but only 1 gm of it was soluble. I would have to eat 6 bowls of Kashi cereal to get that same amount of soluble fiber that is in one Cinch shake. I also noticed when I was at the store that a lot of products just say fiber and don’t tell you what kind is in it. My guess would be that those may not have any soluble fiber at all.

Have a great Day!

Live Healthy my friends!
